SCHAF ESTABLISHES KNOW YOUR GENEOTYPE (KYG) CLUB IN OYO.

SCHAF embarked on the “Community Approach to the Reduction of Sickle Cell Disease in Oyo State Nigeria, using the NYSC as a medium of Change project”. Part of the expected outcome of this project is to establish Know Your Genotype (KYG) Club in select secondary schools across the 5 NYSC Zones in Oyo State as a pilot.

SCHAF visited Oba Adeyemi High School Oyo (Oyo Zone-Oyo East LGA) on Tuesday 23^rd May 2023 to establish KYG club in the school. A total of 56 students in SS1 & 2 voluntarily indicated interest in becoming members of the club. A pre-test questionnaire was administered to the students to test their knowledge on SCD, with an intention to do a repeat test in 6 months and 1 year. This is to assess their knowledge before, during and after they are taught and educated on SCD related issues.

The KYG clubs are harbingers of greater things to come, catching them young, towards propagating the awareness of SCD for prevention in the rural communities.
