SCHAF Celebrates 2024 World Sickle Cell Day(WSCD) held at Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Multi-purpose Hall UCH, Ibadan.

On June 19, 2024, the halls of the Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Multi-purpose Hall in Ibadan bloomed with hope and resilience as it hosted the commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day.

This significant event was brought to life through a collaborative effort between the Sickle Cell Hope Alive Foundation (SCHAF) and the esteemed Ogundoyin’s Family.

The dignified gathering was honored by the presence of the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, the honorable Bayo Lawal, and the esteemed Speaker of Oyo State, honorable Adebola Ogundoyin, alongside their families. Joining them were several other eminent personalities from various sectors.

The event saw a heartening turnout of over 500 Sickle Cell patients, affectionately known as warriors, who were accompanied by their dedicated caregivers. Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, secondary school students from different locations and members of secondary schools where SCHAF has established the "Know Your Genotype" (KYG) clubs graced the occasion with their youthful energy and commitment to awareness.

 Eng Ibukun Falusi, standing in for the Chairman of SCHAF, eloquently set the tone for the event with a warm welcome Address.

 Prof. Falusi, the visionary founder and trustee of SCHAF, captivated the audience with a thought-provoking presentation titled "Bridging the Existing Gaps in SCD Care and Treatment," outlining pathways to better care and support for those affected.

Professor C.P. Babalola, the distinguished Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University Ogun State, shared a stirring discourse on "Hope and Progress: Uniting for Progress in Sickle Cell Disease," inspiring optimism and determination among attendees.

A poignant highlight of the event was a heartfelt panel discussion featuring Sickle Cell patients and their caregivers. Their narratives of resilience and strategies for coping resonated deeply, shedding light on the human side of battling Sickle Cell Disease.

The Ogundoyin family exemplified compassion and generosity by providing 500 medication packs for the warriors in attendance, ensuring they have access to necessary medical support. Additionally, each warrior received a sum of 5,000 naira for transportation symbolizing financial support.

A significant moment at the event was the presentation of a 5 million naira cheque to SCHAF. This generous donation aims to empower warriors and caregivers, enabling them to live more substantial lives despite the challenges posed by Sickle Cell Disease.

This gathering held special significance as it was dedicated in honor of the late Chief Adeseun Ogundoyin, who bravely battled Sickle Cell Disease until his passing at the age of 51. His legacy of resilience and advocacy served as a guiding light throughout the event, inspiring all present to continue the fight against this challenging condition.
