Cell Awareness Month”
“…Sickle cell disease is a disorder of the blood and Nigeria is
the leader in this problem”. “We have the greatest problem, the largest number
of people who can transmit this disease as trait. “We have the largest number
of patients who are receiving care. “So, we need to attend to this problem and
be able to control the disease by letting people know early in life what to do
with themselves and make their own informed decision by knowing their genotype
on time not when they want to marry.
How can you make a difference?
Here are some great ideas of how you can make a difference in
the life of someone with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD):
1. Become
a Blood Donor!
Some individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) need blood
transfusions every month!
If your ancestral roots are in Africa, the Caribbean, India, the Middle East or
the Mediterranean, your blood donation is especially valuable as it will match
more closely to individuals with SCD. Donating blood is one of the
easiest ways
of making a huge difference in the life of SCD-affected individuals.
2. Become
a SCHAF Volunteer
We need enthusiastic volunteers who can commit their time and
resources towards the Control of Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria.

3. Learn
something new about Sickle Cell Disease
The more you know, the more you can educate others.
a. Visit our website: www.schafoundation.org for
information about SCD.
b. If you don’t know your status, ask your doctor for a sickle cell
test or you can register with us for a blood phenotype testing.
c. If you or someone you know has had a baby, you can find
out if the baby carries the sickle gene buy visiting a health centre close to
you to get tested.
