World Sickle Cell Day 2025 Community Rally

NYSC Band and SCHAF volunteers marching for World Sickle Cell Day awareness

To mark World Sickle Cell Day 2025, SCHAF organized a community awareness rally focused on public education, genotype testing, and early prevention. The goal was to engage directly with people at the grassroots level and amplify the message through media and youth involvement.

We started at APEX Event Centre, Yidi Road, and moved through:

  • Gate Market
  • Garage at Gate
  • Bus Stop Markety
  • Gate Bus Terminal
  • NTA Shopping Complex

These busy locations were chosen to ensure we reached everyday people i.e market women, drivers, passersby, and commuters who often miss health messages shared only in formal settings.

What We Did:

  • Engaged the public with flyers, handbills, and on-the-spot conversations.
  • Spoke directly with market women, drivers, and youth about genotype testing and sickle cell prevention.
  • Partnered with the NYSC Band to attract attention and energize the crowd.
  • Conducted media interviews to extend our message beyond the rally route.

Media Coverage:

  • NTA Ibadan
  • Diamond FM
  • CEO Africa

Key Advocates Interviewed:

  • Prof. Chinedum Babalola: Stressed early genotype screening and responsible marital choices.
  • Dr. Olayinka Kotila: Emphasized the health and social burden of sickle cell disorder and called for stronger public support.

Impact:

The community responded with curiosity and gratitude.

Many took materials, asked questions, and expressed interest in getting tested.

The rally created real-time discussions about genotype awareness and prevention.

Conclusion:

This year’s rally was a high-impact, grassroots-driven initiative. With strong media support, youth involvement, and strategic outreach locations, SCHAF successfully amplified awareness about sickle cell disorder and preventive health action.
