On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Sickle Cell Hope Alive Foundation (SCHAF) hosted its Annual Gifting Day, a heartfelt outreach programme dedicated to supporting People Living with Sickle Cell Disease (PLWSCD).

The event brought together Sickle Cell Warriors, caregivers, volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters in a powerful display of love, resilience, and community. Over the years, SCHAF’s Annual Gifting Day has grown beyond an event into a symbol of reassurance, reminding every warrior that they are not alone on their journey.

A Day of Impact for Sickle Cell Warriors and Caregivers

The 2026 edition of the Annual Gifting Day reaffirmed SCHAF’s unwavering commitment to care, advocacy, empowerment, and community support. A total of 421 participants attended the programme, reflecting the Foundation’s growing reach and trust within Oyo State and beyond.

The participants included:

  • 103 adult Sickle Cell Warriors
  • 174 child Sickle Cell Warriors
  • 144 caregivers

Their presence underscored the importance of sustained community-driven support for individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease.

Strong Government and Stakeholder Support for Sickle Cell Care

The programme was honoured by the presence of key government and institutional representatives who demonstrated strong solidarity with the sickle cell community. Attendees included:

  • Dr. Kayode Ayanyemi, Local Inspector of Education, Ibadan North East Local Government, representing the Commissioner for Education
  • Dr. Akinfemi Akinyode, representing the Commissioner for Health, alongside Mrs. Adedeji Christiana of the Non-Communicable Diseases Desk
  • Dr. Dauda Stephen, Director of Marketing, representing the Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Health Insurance Agency (OYSHIA)
  • Professor Prisca Adejumo, Vice President II, SCHAF

Special Mention:
The Chairman of the occasion was the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Professor Temidayo Ogundiran, ably represented by Professor Prisca Adejumo of the Department of Nursing, University of Ibadan.

Their presence highlighted the critical role of collaboration between government, healthcare institutions, and civil society organizations in improving outcomes for people living with sickle cell disease.

Words of Hope and a Life-Changing Health Intervention

Goodwill messages delivered by Professor Adeyinka Falusi, Founder and Trustee of SCHAF; Dr. (Mrs.) Oresegun, Chairman of the Programme; Professor Prisca Adejumo; and other dignitaries inspired renewed hope and commitment to sickle cell advocacy.

A major highlight of the day was the announcement of free health insurance registration for Sickle Cell Warriors under the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme, made by the representative of OYSHIA. This announcement brought visible relief and joy to many families, promising improved access to quality healthcare and reduced financial burden.
